Budget Miyajima: Ferry Lifehacks, Cheap Oysters, and Free Trails

Hi! Mia here. Miyajima Island is more than just beautiful views; it can be a serious test for your wallet if you follow the standard tourist paths. However, you can have an amazing day here on a modest budget. I’m sharing all the tips for a smart trip.

  1. Free Ferry with JR Pass If you have a JR Pass (any type, including regional ones), you don’t need to pay for the ferry to the island. Of the two ferry companies, choose the one with the JR logo. Lifehack: grab a spot on the right side of the deck on the way to the island — that’s the side with the best view of the famous torii gate from the water. If you don’t have a pass, the ticket is about 200 yen one way, which is still quite affordable.

  2. Gastronomy: Oysters and Momiji Manju Miyajima is famous for its oysters. In oceanfront restaurants, a set of two oysters can cost 1000 yen. My advice: look for small stalls deeper into the Omotesando shopping street. You can find the same fresh grilled oysters for 400-500 yen per pair. For dessert, be sure to try «Momiji Manju» — maple-leaf-shaped cakes. The cheapest ones are the classic red bean paste variety, costing about 100 yen each.

  1. Mount Misen: Ropeway vs. Hiking A round-trip ropeway ticket costs about 2000 yen. If you are in good physical shape, choose one of the three hiking trails (the Daisho-in trail is the most popular). The climb takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, but it’s completely free, and along the way, you’ll see dozens of hidden statues and small shrines not visible from the cable car. Bonus: you’ll burn off all the calories from the cakes you ate earlier.

  2. Water and Snacks: Stock Up Early On the island, prices in vending machines and shops are higher than on the mainland. Buy water and light snacks at a supermarket near JR Miyajimaguchi Station before boarding the ferry. There are many picnic areas on the island with stunning views where you can eat your bento and save on an expensive restaurant.

Travel brightly and spend wisely!
